An International Women's Day Manifesto
On the weight of it all, the proof of life, and a 26-year rebellion against the architecture of inadequacy.
When I started MV in 1999, the term 'CEO' was not in my vocabulary. I was a facialist working at the literal coalface of women's insecurities. Every day, I saw skin that had been bullied - stripped by harsh and aggressive formulations, and suffocated by marketing promises that were, frankly, impossible to keep.
Twenty-six years later, as the founder of a brand that has survived an industry obsessed with the ephemeral new, I have realised that my job is not merely to source therapeutic oils or oversee the micro-batch production of MV in our Sydney facility.
My real responsibility is much heavier. I am here to protect your relationship with your own reflection.
The beauty industry is a machine designed to make women feel like they are leaking value as they age. It is a world largely architected by men - figures like Revson and Factor - who viewed the skin not as a living organ, but as a canvas to be corrected
(read more on that here). They saw flaws where I saw life, wisdom, and resilience. But we must ask ourselves 'why was it so necessary to make us feel inadequate?'
The truth is, only the powerful need to be subdued.
The industry’s obsession with our perceived 'defects' is a direct response to our strength. By keeping us in a state of constant 'fixing', we are kept distracted and monetised. Reclaiming our power begins with the refusal to be diminished by a bottle of cream. It is a rebellion that starts in the bathroom mirror - a decision to see our skin as a reflection of our vitality rather than a problem to be solved.
Choosing to be a female founder in this space requires a specific, often exhausting, kind of rebellion. It is why I chose to stop dyeing my hair and embrace my silver years ago. I was the public face of a beauty brand, and I knew that every time I stepped in front of a lens, I was being placed under a microscope. By refusing to hide, I was making a quiet, stubborn statement, ‘I will not
participate in a culture that treats the passing of time as a professional failure’.
This stance is not just a branding exercise. It is a philosophy forged in grief.
Losing my best friend Bridget to ovarian cancer far too young imprinted in me a truth that the beauty industry spends billions trying to obscure, that ageing is a gift. There is a profound absurdity in obsessing over the plight of living while simultaneously trying to erase theproof of life. Wrinkles are not failures of the skin; they are evidence of a life actually lived.
This is why we chose the name Skintherapy over Skincare.
Therapy is an act of returning to centre. When we advocate for the art of the ritual - the intentionality of the warm compress, the slow, rhythmic massage of an oil - we are not just talking about products. We are talking about reclaiming three minutes of your day from a world that demands you always be on. It is about repairing a barrier that has been compromised by more than just
ingredients; it has been compromised by the pace of modern life.
Last year, we donated 40% of our profits to charity.
We remain 100% female-run.
These are not 'marketing hooks' for an International Women's Day banner; they are the literal manifestation of my own values. Did you know that 'MV' stands for My Vision, My Values? If I have a platform, I have a duty to use it to empower women. Not by selling a dream of perfection, but by offering a reality of health.
To the women who have been with us since 1999, and to those just now finding us because their skin is finally protesting the industry’s noise: I promise to keep being the rebel. I will keep sourcing the ingredients that others find too expensive and telling the truths that others find too risky.
Your skin is a living, breathing reflection of your life. It does not need to be erased. It needs to be nurtured.
